An independent journal from JapanReporting & photography by Michihiro Taguchi

Editorial Policy

The Sumo publishes English explanations and adaptations about sumo and Japanese culture. Our distinctive source is the reporting and photographic archive of Michihiro Taguchi’s Dohyo no Mokugekisha. Official records and event notices supplement that archive. This page explains the credits, dates and source notes.

Who produces the English edition?

Taguchi writes and photographs the Japanese publication. The Sumo is responsible for English editing, translation, selection and explanatory material. An English article drawing on his work is not automatically an article personally written or reviewed by him in English. Our article credits distinguish those roles. His Japanese profile describes his background.

AI tools assist drafting, translation and technical work. Generated wording does not establish a fact or create firsthand experience. Source checks use the underlying reporting or records. We do not name a reviewer unless that person actually reviewed the material.

Match a claim to its source

For reported events and opinions, link the Japanese article and identify the period it describes. For official schedules, ranks and rules, link the relevant Association page. Venue-specific restrictions belong with the relevant event. Record tables need a period and an explanation of their columns.

Calculations must be labelled and state their inputs and assumptions. A sample price is not a live quote; multiplying a salary by twelve is not proof of an individual’s annual earnings. An omission from one document does not establish that information is unavailable everywhere.

Photographs and illustrations

Original archive photographs are credited to Michihiro Taguchi. A photograph’s source link shows where it was published; it does not verify every claim on the English page. Captions identify only people, events and dates supported by the source. We do not infer the photographer’s seat or invent ringside experience.

Some explanatory pages use computer-generated ink-style artwork. It is identified as illustration, not documentary photography. We do not generate depictions of real wrestlers or give illustrations a photographic credit.

Dates and historical accounts

An old streak, rank or body measurement should not be presented as current. Publication and modification dates describe the page; a source-check date describes the particular material checked. Adding a link or improving layout does not mean every fact has been freshly verified.

When sources disagree, identify the source and its date. Leave an unresolved value unreported rather than estimate it. Distinguish a writer’s judgement from a result or record.

Corrections and older articles

Older articles are reviewed as factual or sourcing problems are found. This is not a claim that every historical sentence has received a new source-by-source audit. Material corrections are noted on the affected page; routine formatting and link repairs may appear only in its modification date.

On October 2, 2026, corrections addressed ticket-price arithmetic, unverified same-day-ticket advice, seat-specific restrictions, unsupported nutrition explanations, a historical winning-streak account and salary attribution. See the ticket guide, spectator rules, chanko guide, January 2026 streak account and salary explanation.

Report errors through Contact & corrections, including the URL, the sentence or figure and a supporting source if available. Questions about photograph reuse can use the same form. We do not promise a fixed response time.

Independence

The Sumo is independent of the Japan Sumo Association. Linking an official source does not imply endorsement. Advertising, where served, does not make an advertiser the source of editorial claims. See the disclaimer and privacy policy.
